How To Install Wordpress Plugin For Beginners [3 Fastest Ways]

Wordpress is rated as the world largest CMS platform for starting serious and effective blogging career. On the other hand, wordpress has leveraged its usability by making it easier for user to harness and explore the best out of their platform.

After installing wordpress, there are couples of technical stuffs that you still need to familiar with, especially as a beginner, and one of those technical stuffs is plugin and its installations.

Plugins lets you add new amazing features to your wordpress site such as add a gallery, slideshow, etc. Basically, wordpress plugin allows you to add extra features to your blog aside from default ones.

WordPress has thousands of plugins on its directory and also on third-party sites which will make your blogging life so much easier. You can download premium wordpress plugin from site like GPLDL, Themelord, and CodeCanyon. While you can always get free wordpress plugin from wordpress plugin directory.

It is very easy to install plugin on wordpress if you follow the simple instructions below, there are 3 popular ways of installing wordpress plugin.

  1. Plugin Search Method

  2. Admin Plugin Upload Method

  3. Manual Installation Using FTP Manager

But before we move into the main tutorial, there is one thing you need to understand.

Many wordpress beginner constantly ask questions about why they were unable to install both free and premium plugin to their wordpress site, and also why they can’t find plugin tab on their dashboard.

The straight answer is, plugin installation is restricted to users.

This simply means, if you are using free wordpress platform, such as, you will not be able to use plugin, therefore, you will need to upgrade to self hosted wordpress plan, such as to be eligible for this plugin installation offer.

Now, let dive straight in to the main tutorial.

The 3 Fastest Ways Of Installing Wordpress Plugin

1. The Plugin Search Option

The search method of installing wordpress plugin is acknowledged as the fastest and the easiest method out of all, in which you can basically install plugin just only by searching the name of the plugin from your wordpress dashboard (only if you know the plugin’s name) and get it installed.

The only hitch of this preference is that, the plugin you are going to search must be in the WordPress plugin directory which is limited to only free plugins that follow GPL and WordPress guidelines.

To make use of the plugin search method: Follow below steps

Step 1

Go to your wordpress dashboard and click on plugin, then hit Add New button – Plugin > Add New

Step 2

Go ahead and type the plugin name in the search box then hit Enter

Then, you will see the list of all related plugins that matched your search, most of the time, it displays exactly what you search on the first page. Then go ahead and click the “Install Now” button and leave the rest.

For example, I searched for “The Event Calendar” plugin in the screenshot below.

After that, wordpress will then automatically download and install the plugin for you. After this, you will see the accomplishment message with a link to activate the plugin. See screenshot below.

Step 3

The final step is to go into the settings panel of the plugin and configure the plugin by applying needed changes. Habitually, many beginners make the mistake of installing plugins without properly configuring them. Whenever you install new plugin, always ensure you configure them properly to get their jam-packed advantages.

2. Admin Plugin Upload Method

There are various ways that can necessitate using this method such as, if your desired plugin is not listed in wordpress directory, may be, because it’s a premium or non-GPL plugin. Any which way, you will need no other option than to upload the plugin .

So how would you do that?

Step 1

The first step you need to take is to get the plugin ready by downloading it from your desired premium wordpress plugin sites like I’ve mentioned earlier.

Note: the plugin must be in Zip format. [.Zip File]. I assumed you know how to unzip any zipped files.

Step 2

Visit your wordpress dashboard and click Plugin > Add New > Upload Plugin.

Step 3

You will be redirected to your computer directory where you will be able to choose plugin file that you have already downloaded. So go ahead and select the plugin file and hit “Install Now” button.

WordPress will then upload the plugin file from your computer and automatically install it. Then you will be taken to a page where you will able to finally activate the plugin just like I’ve explained in the first method. Just go ahead and click “Activate Now

After that, you will have to configure the plugin just to match your need and once you do that, you have successfully install wordpress plugin by using uploading method.

3. Manual Installation Using FTP

Although, this method is not recommendable among newbies as it is a little bit technical compare to those we’ve just mentioned above. But, where there is no alternative, may be, due to one reason or the other which restrict access to make use of your wordpress dashboard, then, that is when FTP method comes in.

This does not require too much steps, all you need to do is to get access to your host via the FTP manager, once you’re connected with the FTP server then drag and drop your zipped plugin file for uploading. Normally, the plugin upload folder is located under wp-content/plugins.

Once uploading the files, you need to visit the WordPress dashboard and click on Plugins tab. Then, you will find your plugin successfully installed.

Keep in mind that, despite activating, you may still need to configure the plugin settings to meet your target.

Let’s round it up

Those are the three easiest steps that will pave your route when attempting to install both free and premium plugin on any wordpress site.

Personally, I always voted for the search method which is listed as first on this list, while other two methods are used occasionally by myself.

Let’s rub minds

Hope this post helped you to install WordPress plugin easily, if there is anything you don’t understand, as usual, do not think twice to beep me up. And also let us know which of these methods you prefer most.
